Note
  • Sam Abell has worked as a contract photographer for National Geographic. An assignment first led him to trace the steps of Charles Marion Russell (1864-1926) in Montana. Where Russell created sketches and paintings Abell has used his camera to capture the life of the present-day cowboy. Abell's images capture five men riding out to round up wild horses, a bronco rider gritting his teeth as he is about to leave the chute, and pictures of Blood Indians today, the tepee and medicine bundle of Pete Standing Alone, Blood Indian dancers, as well as other activities such as a buffalo roundup, and branding. These two are combined in this book to present the west of today as well as the west of a hundred years ago
