Summary
Chester Pierce was the first Black athlete allowed to play in a college football game below the Mason-Dixon line during the Jim Crow era of legally enforced racial segregation in the southern United States. On October 11, 1947, Pierce's Harvard College team faced the University of Virginia. The Harvard Crimson broke a long-standing "gentleman's agreement" between northern and southern teams by bringing Pierce on the trip to Virginia and sent him out on the field
