Note
There are numerous names of individuals in the index, primarily commanders and some crew who are listed with their vessels in various actions during the warThe bulk of this book is devoted to the Pacific theater. There is little coverage of ships in the American theater and limited coverage of the European theater. The reason why is that a majority of the Navy's seaplane tenders were sent to the Pacific, because the expansive ocean demanded large numbers of patrol aircraft. Moreover, unlike Europe there were few airstrips in the Pacific, and these aircraft tended to be in the advance movement of Allied forces toward JapanThe author gives seaplanes and their seaplane tenders a detailed coverage of their mission and important contributions. Numerous pictures and maps support detailed text. There are a number of appendices.Nautical terms and use of the book's index (p.xxiii-xxv)U.S. Asiatic fleet abandons the Philippines chapter 1 -- Overview of the seaplane tenders, patrol wings and fleet air wings chapters 2-3 -- Initial actions in the Pacific theater (Pearl Harbor, Phillipines, and Darwin Australia's Pearl Harbor) chapters 4-11 -- War in the Americas chapter 12 -- Guadalcanal, New Caledonia, American Samoa, and other South Pacific islands chapter 13-15 -- African and European theaters chapters 16-17 -- Operations facilitating /leading up to the Allied liberation of the Philippine Islands chapters 18-24 --Invasion of the Philippines, Iwo Jima, Okanawa, and final Third Fleet operations against Japan chapters 25-28 -- End of war and post-war demobilization chapter 29 [from the Preface] -- Postscript -- Appendices A-L.Author: Commander David D.
