Summary
The Bruce Alger Collection begins with Alger's campaign and election in 1954, continues through his tenure in office and follows his political interests and activities up to 1979. Correspondence and U. S. House procedures are a a major portion of the collection contents. The congressional papers include speeches, letters, as well as House bills, resolutions, and voting records. An interesting aspect of this section deals with the Ways and Means Committee, on which Alger served. Reports on Urban Renewal, the Hoover Commission, Public Assistance, Tax Bills and Civil Rights issues are also well represented. The remainder of the collection gives a more in-depth look at Bruce Alger. It reveals what issues he remained interested in including Civil Rights, Urban Renewal, the Kennedy Assassination, busing, school prayer, and the Vietnam War. The remainder of the collection consists of newspaper clippings, photographs, tapes and books, including three manuscripts written by Alger. The collection is an excellent source for American politics, Texas politics, ultra conservatism in the 1850s, 60s, and 70s as well as a biography of Congressman Bruce Alger
