Note
Niagara-on-the-Lake is a town in Ontario, Canada, located on the Niagara Peninsula at the point where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario. It was the first capital of Upper Canada, the predecessor of Ontario. It was founded as Butlersburg in 1781, later called West Niagara. From 1792-1797 it was called Newark. In 1798 it was renamed Niagara. It was a battleground in the War of 1812. Taken by the Americans in the Battle of Fort George, it was razed and burnt to the ground as American soldiers withdrew to Fort Niagara. It was rebuilt after the war. The name was changed again in 1880 to Niagara-on-the-Lake as a postal address to distinquish it from Niagara Falls, but was not officially adopted until 1970Reprint.
