Summary
North Dakota, 1999. When Landreaux Iron accidentally shoots and kills his neighboring friend's five-year-old son, he turns to prayer for guidance, and finds a way forward in tradtition: he and his wife will give their own youngest son to the grieving Ravich family. Though an attempt at justice and atonement, the act brings anguish and complications in its wake for all members of the two families, from the wives--half-sisters who don't get along--to the boy himself, LaRose, who must reorient his life within a new family. The community they live in also feels the repercussions, and soon tensions rise as a man whom Landreaux had a volatile past with begins using the death and restitution as part of his own desire for revenge and vengence
