While a blizzard pummels England, six people gather in the tiny village of Sittaford at the home of Captain Trevelyan, who has rented the house for the winter. That evening during a seance, a spirit predicts Trevelyan's murder. When one of the guests, Major Burnaby, checks up on his friend, he discovers that the captain is indeed dead.
