Summary

Inspector Lavardin is sent to a small coastal town to investigate the murder of a devout and wealthy Roman Catholic writer. When the inspector arrives, he discovers that the widow, Helene, is an old flame of his. In the course of his probing, Lavardin inadvertently discovers that the town holds many other secrets.
